Steve Flack talks to Bob Yates. Bob, a promoter/manager who has had a long and successful association with the music industry, is author of the warts-and-all book “The Angels”. It all began in 1974. While recuperating from an operation, Bob opened a folk club in a Balmain church hall which led to him promoting small concerts and big dances with Skyhooks, Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, Radio Birdman, Saints, Sports, Ferrets . . . and The Angels.

In this video interview Steve Flack talks to brothers John and Rick Brewster, founding members of legendary Australian rock band The Angels.
The Angels were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in October 1998 with the line-up of Bailey, John and Rick Brewster, Eccles and Neeson. Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, declared that "The Angels had a profound effect on the Australian live music scene of the late 1970s/early 1980s. [They] helped redefine the Australian pub rock tradition... [their] brand of no-frills, hard-driving boogie rock attracted pub goers in unprecedented numbers. In turn, The Angels' shows raised the standard expected of live music. After 20 years on the road, the band showed little sign of easing up on the hard rock fever."

Spy vs Spy, also known as v. Spy v. Spy, The Drug Grannies and The Spies, are an Australian ska/pub rock band from Sydney formed in 1981. They became known for tackling political issues through their music, including racism, homelessness and contemporary drug culture. Steve caught up with guitarist and songwriter Mike Weiley at a recent gig.

Peter Walker was a founding of Bakery, an Australian progressive hard rock band that later featured vocalist Barry Leef and bassist Jackie Orszaczky. After 6 years on the road, Peter migrated into the studio world via Charles Fisher and Trafalgar Studios where he began engineering albums, often with people he knew from his touring days. He engineered and produced numerous albums through the seventies and eighties - covering a huge range of music: rock, pop, country, film soundtracks etc. These were heady days, with large budgets and long sessions. Peter was also the resident session guitar player, playing on many tracks and advertising jingles. Much of that work was un-credited as his specialty was replacing existing parts (or beefing them up) for albums of well-known bands including 'Eagle Rock' (Daddy Cool), 'Hey True Blue' (John Williamson) and 'Khe Sahn' (Cold Chisel).

Mark Punch is a guitarist, singer and songwriter who started playing in bands after leaving school in the early '70s. After a couple years, he joined a band that featured a young singer, Richard Kaal, who had a recording deal with EMI, and producer Rod Coe. Mark thus played on his first recording sessions.

This was the beginning of a long career of playing with most, if not all, of the major singers of the last 35 years in Australia. He continues to do so today.

Recorded in late 2005, this video interview is what we believe to be the last Pete Wells gave before he lost his battle with prostate cancer early in 2006.

From 1976, Pete Wells was the founder and slide guitarist in Australian hard rock band, Rose Tattoo. A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist in his own right, he  co-wrote at least 17 tracks, including the single, "One of the Boys" before leaving the band in early 1983.

An Interview with Stu Marshall
A member of Sydney heavy metal bands Empires of Eden and Paindivision, guitarist Stu Marshall is best known as a member of the Sydney metal band Dungeon with whom he recorded three albums and toured extensively throughout Australia, Europe and Japan between 2001 and 2005.

In late 2005 Marshall founded Paindivision (originally named 20 Grams) and shortly afterwards, Dungeon disbanded. A four-track EP was recorded and released late in the year.

Paindivision has released two albums and toured extensively in Australia and Japan and opened for a range of touring acts including Armored Saint, Death Angel, Black Label Society, Helloween and Vanishing Point. The band now appears to been on extended hiatus as Marshall concentrates on Death Dealer, a power metal band featuring Ross the Boss.

In 1976 guitarist Chris O'Doherty, (AKA Reg Mombassa), formed rock band Mental As Anything with four other art students. Reg left the band 25 years later but not before they had produced  11 albums and 27 singles( with 20 entering the top forty) and having toured Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England, Europe, the United States and Asia. Reg's artwork is renowned worldwide and he has had a close association with Mambo Graphics since 1986. He is now a member of the band Dog Trumpet with his brother Peter (also ex-Mentals) performing and recording original music.

We followed the progress of a recent Sydney programme with coach Paul Christie (Mondo Rock, The Party Boys) that culminated in a Big Gig featuring all the participating bands.

It was great to be mentored by Paul Christie" said participant Blake Pardy. "He told lots of interesting stories and anecdotes about the guitar heroes and rock gods that he’s come across in his career and his tough love approach to coaching our band got good results in only a few weeks.”Blake met guitarist and songwriter, Kim Walker through the Warriors programme. Kim has now joined Blake's  band  Sound Concern.
